Dental Bleaching

Dental bleaching is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves the use of special gels to whiten and brighten discolored or stained teeth. This treatment is different than teeth whitening.

Dental bleaching is generally suitable for people who have healthy teeth and gums but are experiencing discoloration or staining due to various factors, such as aging, smoking, drinking coffee or tea, or certain medications.

Dental bleaching can help to remove these stains and discolorations, resulting in a brighter and whiter smile. In addition to cosmetic reasons, dental bleaching may also be beneficial for individuals who have experienced tooth discoloration as a side effect of certain medications, such as tetracycline, or as a result of trauma to the tooth.

It's a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of the teeth and improve one's confidence in their smile. In general, most people can get teeth whitening, but it's significant to note that not everyone may be a good candidate. Dentists can also help their patients determine if any underlying dental issues need to be addressed before undergoing a whitening treatment. If there is another disease, this problem must be solved first.

Why Do Teeth Lose Whiteness?

Teeth can lose their whiteness for several reasons. One of the main causes of tooth discoloration is the natural aging process. As people age, the outer layer of enamel on our teeth wears down, revealing the yellowish dentin layer underneath. Other common causes of tooth discoloration include:

  • Consumption of Certain Foods and Drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored fruits and vegetables can stain the teeth over time.
  • Tobacco Use: Both smoking and chewing tobacco can cause teeth to become yellow or brown.
  • Poor oral Hygiene: Not brushing and flossing regularly can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth, which can cause them to become discolored.
  • Certain Medications: Some drugs, such as antibiotics, can cause tooth discoloration.
  • Genetics: Some people are more prone to tooth discoloration due to their genetic makeup.

In some cases, tooth discoloration may be a sign of an underlying dental problem, such as a root canal infection or tooth decay. It's critical to consult with a dentist if a person experiences sudden or severe tooth discoloration.

What are the Dental Bleaching Methods?

There are two main methods of dental bleaching.

  • In-office Bleaching: In-office bleaching, also known as chairside bleaching, is a professional teeth whitening treatment that is performed in a dental office. The procedure involves applying a high-strength bleaching gel to the teeth and then activating it with a special light or laser to accelerate the whitening process.

Before the application begins, the dentist first cleans the teeth and protects the gums and soft tissues by placing a barrier over them. The bleaching gel is then applied to the teeth and left on for a specific amount of time, usually 15-30 minutes. During this time, the dentist may use a special light or laser to enhance the bleaching process.

After the bleaching gel has been removed, the dentist evaluates the results and determines if any further treatment is needed. Depending on the desired level of whitening, additional bleaching sessions may be necessary.

  • Take-Home Bleaching Trays: Take-home bleaching trays are custom-made trays that are used to whiten teeth. They are usually made of clear plastic and are designed to fit over the patient's teeth snugly. These are used in conjunction with a bleaching gel that is applied to the inside of the trays.

To use take-home bleaching trays, the dentist first takes impressions of one's teeth to create a custom-fit tray. Once it's ready, the person is given a bleaching gel to apply to the inside of the tray. They then wear the tray for a prescribed amount of time, typically for several hours each day or overnight, depending on the strength of the gel.

Take-home bleaching trays are considered to be an effective and safe method of teeth whitening. They allow you to whiten the individuals' teeth in the comfort of their own homes and can be more convenient than in-office bleaching procedures. However, it's essential to follow the dentist's instructions carefully to ensure that using the trays correctly and safely.
